When I want to focus soley on watercolor skills, I sometimes use my imagination to create a piece. This eliminates some of the decision-making process that goes into making art. Unclutters the space in my brain to think only about the interaction between brush, pigment, water, and paper.

The challenge: how to use those four elements in ways that develop a pleasing image and an emotion response in me.

Gray Expanse is one such example of this. The colors, the play between soft and hard edges, the place. All of that evokes a bit of quiet, a bit of beauty, even a fleeting sense of sadness as the sun settles into night.
