A quick watercolor sketch, this painting was one of the first done in Alaska. My brain was still mesmerized by the fact that I actually live here. Somewhat like a child, my perspective was fresh, trying to take in everything new all at once. Like an adult, that perspective was tainted by grown-up fears and anxieties.

Here, I was trying to capture the autumn colors found on the slopes – of willows, blueberries, and other fruit-bearing shrubs and ground cover. Contrasting that is snow on the peaks behind the slope. That we can see snow on the peaks for most of the year is something new to me, and I wanted to share this.
