Painting in the mountains of New Hampshire brings a deep sense of joy and calm to my soul. So, on a recent trip back to New England, I made the rounds to a few favorite spots in the Mountain Washington Valley.

Bear Notch Rd. connects the little village of Bartlett with the Kangamagus Highway, one of America’s Scenic Byways. It’s not heavily trafficked, is favored by road cyclists, and has several pull-offs offering panoramic views of the Whites. In winter mushers. skiers, winter cyclists, and snowmobiles take advantage of it’s closure to vehicles.

Lots of clouds filled the sky this day, with small breaks of cerulean and cobalt blue. This, coupled with a soft breeze and summer colors just beginning to face into autumn, made for a brilliant afternoon of quiet, solitary painting time.
