Drawing Mammals

  • Birchtree Studio New Hampshire United States (map)

Drawing live animals of any type can be a very challenging subject to draw.  How does one render them?  Come to this class and learn how to combine fast sketching with quick observation!  Observation is key to drawing animals.  You will learn just how important it is to keep your eye on the subject and not your paper!  You will also learn how to focus on parts of an animal first, rather than the whole portrait.  Basic mammalian anatomy will be discussed in brief.

Photographs and videos will be our resources for this virtual class. Feeding, hopping, walking or scurrying about; whatever it is the mammals are doing we'll attempt to record in our sketchbooks what we see happening.  There's undoubtedly much animal activity around the habitat in which you live!

Bring with you a 9 x 12" or larger sketchpad (newsprint pads not recommended), drawing pencils (4B, 2B, F and 2H),pen, a white eraser (I recommend a General's Tri-Tip eraser) and a kneaded eraser. Please contact me directly with any questions or for a list of the specific tools I use for sketching.

All classes are currently scheduled in east coast time zone
