Northern Pintail is a “purposeful play” study. At the time I was learning to master using a large watercolor brush. I rather love the way the shapes and pigments worked out. There was no initial drawing, a technique called direct painting. Just pigment and water on paper creating an image I like to call abstract representation: not a scientifically accurate representation but something a few steps in a different direction, slightly abstract.
