Watercolor 15x22” Unframed

One spring evening I went outside to rake and generally clean up the front lawn and was taken with the sight of a large flock of juncos feeding on the ground. As soon as they heard me they lifted off the ground, almost as one unit, and took flight into the sky, creating a long stream of birds swirling ever higher into the pink and gray sunset. This was another of those moments that left me in awe of the physics and mechanics involved in avian flight. That winter, my first up in the northern mountains of NH, saw a great number of juncos all winter in my neighborhood. This moment marked their journey to higher elevations where they spend the breeding season. I did not see them again until I hiked up to elevation later that summer. I felt compelled to recreate the sight of that spring evening and did it in a large painting on 300# rough watercolor paper.
