Some years ago my husband and I hiked up Mt. Watatik in north-central Massachusetts. Our goal on this beautiful fall day was to catch the fall raptor migration. Many species of raptors rise up into the air using heat thermals. They’ll do this repeatedly as they move south. We wanted to see this wonderous event first-hand!

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to. Without raptors to sketch, I turned to something else , in my opinion equally wonderous… a tree! This beautiful, young pine was basking in the warmth of the day.
