Tip to Tail Part 2: More Sketching Birds! CANCELLED

  • Joppa Flats Education Center 1 Plum Island Turnpike Newburyport, MA, 01950 United States (map)

Birders and artists of all skills….are you ready to take your observation skills to a new level?  Join me in an opportunity to learn a little more about our avian friends from an artist’s perspective.  The vast majority of our birding experiences are from afar, which is actually a good thing when starting out as a birder or artist of such, as it reduces them to just “shapes” rather than animals with detailed patterns and textures.  Indeed, shapes and proportions should always be the first place one starts when sketching birds.  Eventually, though, it becomes desirable to want to add some detail to your sketches.  How do you do that if the birds are far away and quickly flitting about?  With access to bird skins, models and parts that you can see and handle up close!  Like with Part 1 of this workshop, each class will be devoted to a different topic related to drawing birds but this time we dig a little deeper into each topic.  This is a valuable block of time each week in which you can solely practice the art of sketching birds.  Each class will begin with inside work but be prepared for outdoor time if weather permits.  We will use photos, mounted specimens and live birds as our resources.  Challenging?  Yes, but you can do this!  You will not learn to create a finished painting on the level of an Audubon or Fuertes but you WILL come away with more skills from the artist’s perspective.  Keeping it simple is still the key to slowly building on your foundational knowledge and a path to success.
