Love birds? Love drawing and sketching? Overwhelmed by the idea of sketching something that moves? VINS has the class for you!

Birds are always on the move. Whether in flight or perched, some part of their body is nearly always moving. Join this 2-day class to develop basic knowledge of bird anatomy and hone your observation and drawing skills. Bone structure, feathers, proportions and body shapes, will be presented for discussion, observation and drawing. We will use photos, mounted specimens, bird artifacts and live birds as our models. The workshop is designed to spend most of our time indoors for focused learning and discussion but be prepared to practice drawing live birds outside. Challenging? Yes, but you can do this! The amount of information will be restricted to basics. Keeping it simple is key to creating a foundational path to success. Live sketching will be built into each class to put to work the skills learned thus far. No fear! One must have a place to start their journey of bird sketching and this is it.

In the past, this has been offered as a four-part workshop with shorter classes. This time we are offering it as a two-part longer workshop. As such, registration includes both classes; signing up for one or the other is not an option. Bring a lunch and your enthusiasm.

No prior drawing experience is necessary.

Class 1: Warm-ups, Bones, Shapes and Proportions
Take this opportunity to study basic avian skeletal information. You will draw an entire skeleton to gain an understanding of what lies beneath the muscle and feathers. We’ll also begin to compare the variety of shapes and proportions of birds and the purposes for these variations.

Bring your current sketchpad (newsprint pads not recommended), drawing pencils, a white eraser (General’s Tri-Tip eraser recommended) and a kneaded eraser. Drawing pens are welcome as well as any tool you enjoy sketching with.

Drawing/sketching experience not necessary.
